About the lecture

Did you know that in 23 years we have extracted as much copper as in the whole history of humankind? Are there recycling operations to recover scarce and valuable metals from end-of-life vehicles? And how does that influence our future and our plans for the green transition?

All of this will be tackled in our next lecture by Dr Alicia Valero, head of the Industrial Ecology Group at the Research Centre for Energy Resources and Consumption, and associate professor at the University of Zaragoza in the Mechanical Engineering Department. Together with her father, Antonio Valero, Dr Valero introduced a unique thermodynamic vision of how world mineral resources are being depleted, known as Thanatia’s theory.

What will you learn:

  • The role of thermodynamics in the scarcity of mineral resources.

  • The limits and challenges of the green energy, digital, and eco transitions.

  • Supply chain risks of raw materials in the near future.

  • A circular economy: is it possible?

  • Is there a way for the optimal use of mineral resources?

About the speaker

Alicia Valero

Alicia Valero Delgado is the head of the industrial ecology group at the Research Centre for Energy Resources and Consumption (CIRCE - Institute) and an associate professor at the University of Zaragoza in the Mechanical Engineering Department. Her research focuses on identifying resource efficiency measures and applying thermodynamics in evaluating resource depletion, a subject in which she has received four international awards.

She is a member of several international expert groups on critical raw materials and is the author or co-author of over 100 papers in international journals and a dozen books related to the analysis and optimisation of energy and raw materials. Together with her father, Antonio Valero, she developed Thanatia's theory – a unique thermodynamic vision of how world mineral resources are being depleted.

In her lecture that is a part of the 30 years of Group-IPS educational series, Dr Valero will raise important questions about the consequences of the raw materials crisis amidst the climate emergency. She will also give advice on what companies should do to ameliorate this, teach about the challenges that come with a low-carbon economy, and examine how companies can navigate the transition. You will be able to better understand the limits of the green transition and the benefits of a green economy.
