CU
Automation & Modelling
Group-IPS
is a multidisciplinary engineering company using
a structure of Competence Units to manage internal
knowledge and expertise. Depending on the current
needs of a project, a synergy is created between
several Competence Units.

Evolution towards
Automation |
|
As an answer
to the technological evolution in
Industrial Automation Projects , we
first added Automation and Modelling
to our palette of activities in 1996.
|
|
Policy |
|
IPS has
had considerable experience with automation
projects. During these projects, it
became clear that the success of a
project above all depends on the preparations
carried out before the actual start
of the works.
Because of the evolution of the typical
project life cycle in recent years,
there is not enough time left comprehensive
preparations. IPS offers the possibility
to start the preparation of the work,
without having to wait for the project
decision, because the budget involved
is much lower.
IPS can also manage to coordination
between different parties, required
for the realisation of automation
projects. IPS is not only able to
take care of the project realisation,
but can also manage the involvement
and the training of the final customer's
personnel.

Approach |
|
Functional
Analysis
The functional analysis is a document
that describes both functions and
means to realise a global functionality.
The functional analysis describes
the full scope of the automation,
supervision, MES layer and also power
distribution.
All the functions are described separately,
and the necessary active devices and
measurement devices, necessary to
realize the functions, are defined
The functional analysis is based on:
The specifications of the main mechanical
suppliers, if available,
The existing specifications in case
of a revamp,
Motor lists, if available,
P&ID, if available,
HMI specifications,
Controller concepts.
If one or more of these are missing,
IPS can produce any of the above-mentioned
documents. IPS will involve the production
personnel, the possible suppliers
and the target specification in order
to specify the required functions.
Specifications
Based on the functional analysis,
IPS produces the necessary specifications
and runs the inquiry for the project.
IPS is able also to take care of the
technical and commercial evaluation
of the offers.
System Design
System Implementation
Process Simulation & Testing
Commissioning
Quality Assurance
Training
The success of an automation project
depends on the reliability and the
availability of the system after its
implementation.
Personnel competence and training
is also very important. Automation
trainings by a Contractor usually
only cover the systems, excluding
functional aspects. The latter, however,
is a must in order to be able to understand
and solve problems that may occur
during the life cycle of a system,
and to develop a stable, long-time
solution (cure the pain instead of
ease the pain).
|
|
Intention |
|
The program
above is based on our experiences
of several projects. The objective
of the BU Automation is to avoid the
problems such as:
Not being able to respect the time
schedule of new projects,
Having far too long start-up times,
Having a poor reliability and availability
of the installation,
Having unmotivated personnel because
of the complexity of the installation
relative to the personnel training
level.
IPS is able to customize its services
according to the customer's needs
and requirements, offering a high
degree of flexibility.
